Here in North Alabama, storm season and winter weather mean power outages - and a generator only helps if it actually starts. The problem? Generators sit unused for months, and that's exactly what causes them to fail.
Why generators won't start
Just like any small engine, fuel left sitting in a generator gums up the carburetor. Add a dead battery on electric-start models, and you're in the dark with a machine that won't run.
Keep it ready
- Don't store it with untreated fuel. Run it dry, or use a stabilizer.
- Start it every month or two and let it run a few minutes under a little load.
- Change the oil per the manual, and keep a spare plug and filter on hand.
- Have it serviced before storm season - not during it.
